TAIPEI: Typhoon Gaemi made landfall on Wednesday (Jul 24) night, with the island's weather authorities predicting the storm to be "the strongest" to hit Taiwan in eight years.
Hundreds of international and domestic flights have already been cancelled and those flight cancellations extended into Thursday. Schools and government offices in Taipei were shut as torrential rains lashed the city, and they will remain closed, as will the stock exchange, for a second straight day.
